The online weave-along project is done!

My weave-along project for weavingtoday.com (thru Handwoven magazine) is done!

It's not bad considering:
1.) Three different changes in color part way through
2.) misreading the profile draft and skipping some squares... we'll refer to that as my creative interpretation.
3.) Using only yarn that I had on hand in my stash
4.) This being the first profile draft I've ever done!

I love this project!!  It was challenging and a lot of fun!

An up close picture of the neat threads made by a 1a-2b-2a-1b treadling pattern:

More juicy weaving details:

Warp & Tabby: 10/2 orange pearl cotton
Weft: 10/2 magenta pearl cotton
2 yard warp
epi = 20 on #10 reed
Summer and winter weave with unusual treadling sequence (1a-2b-2a-1b)
Very small project: 228 ends + 2 floats = 9.5"x18" (post washing and drying)

Understanding the Profile Draft in Summer & Winter

I put together a tutorial for the weavingtoday.com crowd to help weavers who were having trouble understanding the weave-along profile draft.  Here is the cheat sheet:

I can't get the powerpoint to post on blogger, but you can view it here.

The Mistake

I've made an error in my online weave along project and my warp isn't long enough to start over again.  So here are my options.

1.) Leave it and match it with the other side.  But does this still count in the weave along?
2.) Make the other side look right and hide it with photography... but again, does it count in the weave along?  It seems a bit dishonest to hide it with photography.
3.) Take the time to take it out and re-weave it.
4.)  Finish it however I want to (either right or wrong) and make something else for the weave along.

3 Differences

The blue just wasn't working for me... it was fighting on the loom.  The colors were just obnoxious.

So... I've made 3 changes to this warp, I know it's not very scientific but whatever!  It seems to have worked out just fine.  I've changed the color to magenta, the size of the thread to that of the warp, and changed the way I treadled it to a 1-2-2-1 & 3-4-4-3.  Now, I love it!

Now I can't wait to weave more and see the design emerge in a peaceful manner right before my eyes!

Online Weave Along

I have decided to participate in my first online weave along!  It is on weavingtoday.com, which is the online site for the Handwoven magazine that I subscribe to.  They provided the profile draft and we have to design something that fits into that.  It is also my first time using a profile draft!  I am so excited to try new things!

I have decided to to my profile draft in summer and winter weave.  I am running a bit low on yarn supplies so I had to just pick from my collection.  But luckily I love these two colors together anyway!  They're so bright and happy!  I am using 10/2 in orange for the warp and tabby.  And I'm using 5/2 for the pattern weft.

Then I measured out a 2 yard warp...

... fastened it with my ties...

... made it into a chain so it won't tangle too much...

... and sleyed the #10 reed with 2 threads each.

Heddles all threaded... and now I'm all tied on and ready to weave!!

Checking for threading errors... only found 3 and they were all an easy fix!

Here are the original colors... it didn't strike my fancy very much so I changed to a darker blue.  I had to correct a few additional mistakes I found anyway, so this was just a natural stopping point to change colors.

My new set of colors...

Unfortunately I think it still looks a little bit muddy like the first one.  I'm going to press forward anyway, and maybe my opinion will change when it's done.

And maybe not.

I'm really loving the orange though, I just need to find a different 2nd color.  Too bad I'm weaving off of just my stash!
